From Overthinking to Activation: Why Your First Step Matters More Than Perfect Plans
If you’ve ever found yourself swimming in ideas, business ideas, ministry projects, personal dreams with your mind spinning at a thousand miles per hour - you know how overwhelming it can feel. People often ask: “How do I know if what I’m doing is aligned with God’s Word?”
Let's be honest: life (and business) would be so much easier if God just dropped a ready-made, perfectly laminated step-by-step plan in our laps.
Yet, in the middle of all the chaos, your first step matters more than your perfect plan or who you're trying to impress.
First, Go Back to the Source
Before you start chasing shiny ideas like a squirrel in an acorn factory, pause. Your foundation isn’t your to-do list - it’s God’s Word. That’s your compass, your plumb line, your “hey, don’t go wandering off in circles again” anchor.
The Bible says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105). Notice it says “lamp to my feet” - that’s short distance lighting. Not the whole highway plan with all the blue lights, just the next few steps.
Why Your Gifts Matter More Than Your Ideas
Before chasing every idea, the first step is understanding who you are in Christ. Your spiritual gifts. They are God's way of saying,
"Here's how I wired you to make a dent in the world."
Once you anchor in that, decisions get easier. You’ll still have plenty of ideas, but now you’ll have a filter to see which ones actually fit in God's plan. It might not still be the right season, but you will know how to park the ideas and be at peace. I can truly testify to that.
I did an intensive 30-day Romans 12 challenge two years ago, and it truly changed my life. I evaluate every single opportunity through that lens and it has helped me tremendously to walk in true discernment and activate my effort in places where God wants to move.
The Gap That Keeps People Stuck
I've recently worked with a few clients who get clarity in a session, they nod their heads, they write things down and then a month later, nothing has changed. They still complain about not having sales, not moving forward, not seeing any fruit. As if sitting with me in 2-hour sessions, is magically going to create sales for them or attract money.
There’s a gap between knowing and doing. And it’s in that gap that hope dies, faith wavers, and discouragement creeps in. If you linger too long in that gap, doubt, fear and procrastination throw a party and invite discouragement to DJ.
This is exactly where my work sits: helping people shorten that gap by taking the first imperfect step.
.
The Speed of the Gap: Why Timing Matters
The difference between those who move forward and those who stay stuck isn’t just whether they act - it’s how quickly they act once they know what to do.
The gap between clarity and action is the most decisive moment in your journey. If you hesitate too long, your brain fills with doubt, fear creeps in, and momentum slips away. But when you move with speed and precision, you lock in the breakthrough.
Think of it like striking a match: if you wait too long, the flame burns out. But if you move quickly, you light the fire that fuels everything else.
In neuroscience terms, the faster you act on a decision, the more likely you are to reinforce the neural pathways of courage and confidence. The slower you act, the more your brain wires itself for procrastination and hesitation.
The Neuroscience of Action (Why Hope Rises When You Move)
Here’s what brain science tells us:
Taking action, even small action, releases dopamine, which is the brain’s way of saying,
“Yes, progress is happening!”
Dopamine fuels motivation. Motivation fuels more action. Suddenly, you’re in motion. More action, more dopamine. More dopamine, more motivation. And suddenly your actions become bigger.
Waiting until everything feels perfect, on the other hand, keeps you locked in mental loops of overthinking. Your brain doesn’t get the chemical “reward,” so you stay stuck.
That’s why imperfect action beats perfect procrastination every single time.
Hope Is Birthed in Action
Spiritually, this lines up perfectly. James tells us,
“Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead” (James 2:17).
Faith becomes alive when you put it into motion. And once you take that first step, something shifts—you begin to see that movement is possible. Hope rises. Belief strengthens.
Let's be clear though: inspiration is fun, it's a temporary sugar rush. It's that
"Yes, I'm so pumped"
buzz you get after a good podcast, or a scrolling spree in Insta. But once the hype wears off, you're right back where you started. It's when you are equipped, aligned and actually doing the thing, that matters. Your feet moves.
So What’s Your Next Step?
Don’t wait until you have it all figured out. Go back to God’s Word. Anchor yourself in your spiritual gifts. Stop chasing inspiration and start seeking empowerment. Then, move quickly and precisely. Send the email. Make the call. Test the product. Share the message.
Because once you move, God has something to multiply.
